This project is
– a proof-of-concept professional demo of Hypermatch, a hyper-conforming song adaptation technique
– to share a fan favorite version of Taemin’s IDEA, that deserves wider attention both musically and in… IDEA! (Pun intended)

For my song writing prompts, I always translate original Korean/ Japanese lyrics from scratch to English, to capture every possible nuance lost in official translations.

IDEA is about conquering deadly “divine” madness, facing off a self-serving, vainglorious “Messiah”.

Beyond the clash of the two extremes, beyond the dark priest and pristine pure angels, the protagonist deals with a mighty “killer” whose relentless torrents of emanations have been overloading his entire being, and is thus far more lethal than the “mere” tormentor of Criminal. A caustic rage (cutting out a part of his heart) is elegantly woven into the music and the texts.

IDEA was made the final battle “show down” title song in NGDA series, to wrap up a life passage. On closer look
– This is probably Taemin’s most severe commentary via a song, albeit obscured
– Original lyrics were metaphoric enough; the official translation kept the lyrics in abstract riddles (perhaps intentionally)
– Not every one of his struggles is with internal forces
– BoA’s “killing me” is masterfully placed throughout specific points.

Oh, the ‘conception’ in my adaptation is the creative conception, not the procreative one!

I’ve adapted the whole song, would love to go on about the theory of Form in Taemin context, Plato’s IDEA is not the Chinese/ Japanese 理想 etc, but we’ve run out of word space!

HYPERMATCH adaptations communicate the essence of the original song just like standard adaptations. What differs: Hypermatch respects MULTIPLE original song structural elements.

I set out to write seamless adaptations that can be sung along WITH the original song, that capture the original singer’s vocalization, that energetic X factor (unique quality that made the song worth adapting in the first place), to re-express that X feeling in a more accessible language.

The bonus: adaptations that flow naturally, that capture the sonic beauty of the original vocalists (Korean/ Japanese/ Chinese phonetic sounds), and are easy to learn.

HYPERMATCH의 적응 방식은 원곡의 본질을 표준 적응 방식과 동일하게 전달합니다. 다른 점은, HYPERMATCH가 원곡의 여러 구조적 요소를 존중하고 따르는 것입니다.

내 주된 목표는 원곡과 함께 부를 수 있는 자연스럽고 감정적으로 충실한 끊김없는 적응을 만드는 것이었습니다. 이는 원곡의 가수의 발성, 특히 그 노래에 ‘X 요소’를 부여한 감정적인 톤과 에너지적인 표현을 보존하는 것을 의미합니다. (“X 요소”란 원곡이 처음에 적응할 가치가 있게 만든 독특한 품질을 의미합니다.)

HYPERMATCH is
– standard requirements (contextual translation, lyrics writing, close match of rhyming scheme)
– writing to multiple constraints: matching narrative flow phrase by phrase, matching syllabic, vowel, consonant, rhythmic points, vocal arrangements

The songs are sung and rewritten more than 100 times, to achieve NATURAL-SOUNDING, near-seamless EMOTIONAL FLOW. For about 2 years I have refined the technique, and adapted 100+ K-pop, J-pop, C-pop songs.

The artistic disciplines and commercial implications involved in HYPERMATCH should be self-evident to seasoned music professionals. This video channel is non-monetized, very niche and technically exhausting, but my desire to show the impact of this art form is strong. Hope my sincerity can be felt.
